Camaro SS vs Mustang GT vs Challenger R/T: American Muscle Showdown

Arizona Elite Motors·

The Camaro, Mustang, and Challenger are the holy trinity of American muscle. Each takes a fundamentally different approach to the same question: what should a V8 performance car be? We've sold all three extensively at Arizona Elite Motors, and our customers fall into distinct camps. Here's how they actually compare.

Chevrolet Camaro SS - The Driver's Car

The Camaro SS is the most focused driver's car of the three. GM's Alpha platform gives it the best chassis dynamics, the most responsive steering, and the tightest body control. On a track, the Camaro SS with the 1LE package punches well above its weight class.

Strengths:

  • Best handling of the three by a clear margin
  • LT1 engine is smooth, powerful, and loves to rev
  • 1LE track package is one of the best factory performance packages available
  • Magnetic Ride Control (available) transforms the car
  • Strong aftermarket support from the LS/LT community

Trade-offs:

  • Visibility is terrible. The greenhouse is tiny and blind spots are significant
  • Back seat is basically unusable
  • Interior quality is the weakest of the three (improved in later years)
  • GM discontinued the Camaro after 2024, which may affect long-term parts availability (though the LT1 engine will be supported for decades)

Best for: The driver who prioritizes handling and track capability above everything else. If you want the most athletic muscle car that rewards skill behind the wheel, the Camaro is it.

Modified Camaros: The LT1 responds beautifully to bolt-ons. Intake, headers, exhaust, and a tune puts a Camaro SS at 500+ hp. Forced induction takes it into ZL1 territory for a fraction of the cost. We regularly carry both stock and modified Camaros.

Ford Mustang GT - The All-Rounder

The Mustang GT is the most versatile muscle car. It handles well, makes great power, has a usable interior, and the aftermarket is the largest in the automotive world. The 5.0L Coyote V8 is a masterpiece of modern engine design - it revs to 7,500 RPM and sounds incredible doing it.

Strengths:

  • 5.0L Coyote engine is one of the best V8s ever built
  • Largest aftermarket support of any car in production
  • Best visibility and interior of the three
  • Good daily driver with comfortable ride quality
  • Strong resale value
  • Available in convertible (Camaro is too, Challenger is not)

Trade-offs:

  • Rear suspension can feel unsettled on rough roads (especially 2015-2017 models)
  • The independent rear suspension is better than the Camaro's on the street but not quite as sharp on track
  • The 10-speed automatic can be indecisive at low speeds

Best for: The buyer who wants one car that does everything well. Daily commute, weekend canyon runs, occasional track days, and car shows. The Mustang GT doesn't have the Camaro's laser focus or the Challenger's brute force, but it's the best balance of everything.

Modified Mustangs: The Coyote V8 has an insane aftermarket. Bolt-ons (intake, exhaust, tune) easily push past 500 hp. Supercharger kits from Roush, Whipple, and ProCharger are plug-and-play. We've carried Mustang GTs making everywhere from stock power to 800+ hp.

Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack - The Muscle Car

The Challenger is the most honest muscle car of the three. It's big, heavy, loud, and unapologetically old-school. The 6.4L HEMI V8 makes the most power and torque of the group, and the Challenger's size gives it a highway presence that the Camaro and Mustang can't match.

Strengths:

  • 6.4L HEMI is the biggest, most torquey engine here (485 hp, 475 lb-ft)
  • Most comfortable car of the three, especially on highway
  • Largest interior and trunk - it's a genuine grand tourer
  • Widebody option (2019+) adds serious visual presence and grip
  • Available in AWD (GT and R/T trims, not Scat Pack though)
  • The exhaust note is the best of the three (fight us on this)

Trade-offs:

  • Heaviest car by 500+ lbs - you feel the weight in corners
  • Fuel economy is the worst (14-16 mpg city is common)
  • No convertible option
  • ZF 8-speed is excellent, but the 6-speed manual has a rubbery, disconnected feel
  • Dodge discontinued the gas-powered Challenger after 2023, making clean examples increasingly collectible

Best for: The buyer who wants a muscle car that looks and sounds the part without compromise. Long highway cruises, weekend car shows, and straight-line power runs. If you want a refined track weapon, look at the Camaro. If you want a car that turns heads and rumbles the pavement, the Challenger is your car.

Modified Challengers: The 6.4L HEMI responds well to cam, headers, and intake. Naturally aspirated builds can push past 530 hp. Supercharger kits from Whipple and ProCharger create a budget Hellcat. We love carrying clean, well-built Scat Packs.
